A kitchen is no Place for a Man

Respect for A Housewife

Once upon a time, not too long ago,

there lived an old man and his wife.
The old couple lived in a medium-sized
home in a medium-sized town.
The old woman worked as most women
of her time did. She would take care of the
house. She would go to the market, cook
food, mend clothes, make butter, clean, and
do many jobs around the house.
The man did work that was thought
to be manlier. He was a logger. He
would hike deep into the forest every day
to cut down trees. Then he and his fellow
loggers would carry the trees to the mill.
Once at the mill, they would use big
dangerous saws to cut the logs into
boards. This is the kind of work that this
manly man did.
Sometimes in these kinds of
stations, arguments would be started
about who worked the hardest. The
husband would often say things like, ‘You
have no idea how hard I work every day!”

“I wake up before the sun comes
up, hike into the forest, and cut down
trees with my own two hands. While I
do all of these things, you are at home
making soup and chatting with the
neighbors. Your life is too easy!”
“Do not complain about such
things. I am a woman and you are a
man. You are stronger than I am, so it’s
quite right for you to do work that needs
to be done by a strong person. Believe
me, the work I do at home is important.
If I didn’t cook your dinner, then you
would have nothing to eat.”

If I didn’t mend your clothes, then
you would have nothing to wear. If I
didn’t clean the house, then you
wouldn’t have a peaceful home to come
back to. My job is just as important as
yours.” said the old woman.
The woman and the man argued
like this often but the husband wouldn’t
listen to her. A wife can only take so
many rude words. After a while, these
words can make her angry.
One day when they were having this
argument, she shouted, “Fine! I’ve had
enough! Tomorrow I am going to do
your job and you are going to do mine!”
“I will hike deep into the forest to
cut down trees and you will stay here
and take care of the house!”
“That’s okay with me! I would love
to have a vacation from all my hard
work.”
“I’m not going to have any problems
taking care of the house, but I’m not so
sure how well you will be in the forest,”
said the man.
The old couple woke up at the same
time they usually did, but this day would
be different.
As the old woman left the house for
the forest she yelled back to her
husband, “You need to get the soup
started early, dig up and clean some
carrots, mend your jacket, milk the cow,
and cook some greens.”
As she walked down the road to
work, her husband went back to sleep.
A few hours later, the old man woke
up and began his day as a housewife.
The first thing he needed to do was to
make soup, but he couldn’t figure out
what to do.
He knew that soup had vegetables,
but tasted like meat. He tried to remember
if they had any meat in the house. He
remembered that sometimes he ate
chicken soup so he went outside to the
chicken coop.
His wife was the one in charge of
killing and cleaning chickens so he
didn’t know what to do. The old man
wasn’t sure if he should kill a chicken,
because if he killed the chicken, then
they wouldn’t have any eggs.
This housework was really
confusing. He punched the chicken in
the head and brought it in the house.
The old man found the largest pot
in the kitchen and filled it with water.
He then put the pot on a burner and
waited for the water to boil.
As the water boiled, he looked around
for some vegetables. The man had no
idea where his wife kept the vegetables.
Then he remembered that his wife
had told him to dig up some carrots.
The old man went out into the garden
to dig up some carrots.
There were a lot of carrots. The ones
that he pulled up were small but he thought
that they might make a good soup. He
took the carrots back to the kitchen.
The old man wasn’t sure when he
should pluck the chicken’s feathers but
he figured now would be a good time.
As he reached for the chicken, it
came back to life and was quite scared.
The chicken flew all over the kitchen
breaking teacups and glasses. It finally
flew out the door.
It had been a very unlucky day for
the man. All he had done so far was
dig up some tiny carrots and break
many of his wife’s favorite things. “A
kitchen is no place for a man!” he
shouted to himself.

“I should have let my wife stay home
today. Look at the damage I’ve done to
the house, I pray that my wife hasn’t
accidentally cut off her own arm trying
to do ‘my’ job!”
There was no time for him to talk to
himself. He still had to cook the greens.
He had no idea what greens were so
he looked around the house for
something green. He knew that greens
were definitely green.
All he could find in the house that
was green was one of his wife’s hats.
He took some scissors and cut the hat
into little pieces and put them in a small
saucepan for later.

Now he had to go mend his jacket.
He found his wife’s sewing kit and got a
needle and thread. He had ripped a
hole in the jacket so he needed to sew it.
He had never sewn before. He stuck
himself so many times with the needle
that his fingers began to bleed. When
he finished mending the jacket, his hands
hurt so badly that he couldn’t use them
very well.
He had to go milk the cow. That
wouldn’t have been difficult except for that
now his hands were very sore. When he
went to milk the cow, he squeezed too
hard and the cow kicked him in the head.
What a terrible day!

His hands were all red and sore,
the kitchen was a mess from the
chicken, his wife’s hat was cut up and
in a saucepan and now he had a bump
on his head.
It was right at that moment that the
man’s wife came home. The old woman
came in smiling and carrying some
firewood for the night.
She walked in through the back
door and saw her husband sitting down
at the kitchen table with his head in his
hands almost crying.

“Oh my!” yelled the old woman. ‘This
is no way to take care of a home. Look
at all the chicken feathers everywhere
and all of these broken teacups!”
The man didn’t feel like talking that
evening. He didn’t say anything at all.
The woman didn’t complain about her
hat and she didn’t say anything about
the scared cow or the chicken that was
nearly killed.
But most importantly, the old man
never said anything rude to his wife
about housework again. He now had
a lot of respect for her.

Short Story about Bullying for Children

08.01.2013, Comments Off on Short Story about Bullying for Children, Short Story for Children, by .

While I was a student at the age of 10, standing on stage was one thing I really enjoyed. When my mother told me that there was a play and tryouts were the upcoming week, I was very excited. My mother drove me over to the tryouts, and I saw that there were lots of kids who wanted to be in the play. When they told me I made it I was full of joy. I couldn’t stop thinking how much fun this would be.

On the first day I realized there were a group of four girls, and the “leader” of it was this one girl, we can call her T. At first ‘T’ seemed kinda nice, but then things suddenly turned around. She started making up lies, rumors and calling me names which made me cry. They took all my joy away from me. There was a girl who couldn’t stand this bully. She and I promised eachother that we would tell the director about this problem. When I was looking for her, she was making fun of me secretly with the mean girls. I tried to tell the director, but all he said was “kids will be kids, just ignore them.” I had to tell a parent who listened, and they helped. You know the saying “sticks and stone may break my bones, but names will never hurt me”? People say that, but the words are the ones that can hurt the most. I learned that bullies will just try to break you down and make you feel bad about yourself, but they’re just doing that to make themselves feel better. Bullying is NEVER good in any way. Even to this day, I’m still partially bullied. Every now and then someone will try to tear my spirit apart… but I know that you should just ignore it because after a while they’ll just give up.

If you’re a bully, just think how the other person might feel. And if you’re a victim, just tell someone that can help.

When i was in high school, an older sister taught me the following prayer that I started to pray every day:
“Dear God, if I am meant to get married, please give me a husband who will be my first and last boyfriend, at least 10 years older than I am, presentable, who will not depend on both of our families, respectable, somebody whom my family will love and get along with, a husband who will love me a lot and be faithful to me, someone who will not stop me from serving God and support me in my service, a person who loves God so much…”
After college, I worked in a multinational company as a temp for about six months. This was where I met my husband-to-be. However, he was married then, so
I didn’t even bother to consider him although we were friends. When my contract ended, I went to work for my brother and became active in the service to God. During winters, I would go to Chicago to help my sister take care of her kids as she had difficulty during the cold season.
She was the sister who taught me the prayer.
While I was in Chicago, I got so lonely as I missed my family in the Philippines. My loneliness pushed me to spend much time in prayer while I was taking care of
the children and the house. At the time, I was discerning what vocation I was meant to take. I had a dream that after five years I would enter into that vocation. I was 23 and so attracted to the contemplative life, so I felt drawn to becoming a nun.
Three years after, I asked permission from my mom to enter the Carmelite monastery but she did not allow me. A month after that, my husband-to-be called. During
our conversation, I found out that he had gotten both church and civil marriage annulments and, apparently, had received the official documents just a month before.
I knew in my heart that he was the one for me but I could not accept it then, so I just ignored it. Instead, I told myself I that I would pray for him.
He asked me out, but I refused him a couple of times as I didn’t want to be seen with him. Even though his marriage had been annulled, some people would still
view him as once married or still married. When he asked me out again, I told him to attend instead the prayer meeting where I was serving as a music minister. He did, and from then on, he never missed it.
Although my family is very conservative, I noticed that they were open to him and were beginning to like him despite his past status. They even invited him to attend
our community’s Life in the Spirit Seminar. Knowing the kind of person he was, I did not think he would attend and persevere. He did, and was serious about it, which scared me. I felt God was giving him to me on a silver platter and I could not accept it. I prayed, “Dear Lord, I have served You with all my heart, soul and being. I have given my best to You and have made You #1 in my life. Why are You giving me a person who has a past? I know in Your eyes that he is clean and I may be the right person for him. But in the eyes of the world, I will always be his second wife. Some people can be mean and cruel. They
can say and do things that can break, wound and hurt me badly. I don’t deserve a husband like him.”
I had so much fear that it bothered me for many days. I had no peace until I opened my heart to what God was saying. He spoke to the depth of my heart, “My ways
are not your ways. I can see the bigger picture while you cannot. I know what is best for you. Trust in me because I love you more than you can imagine and grasp. Even if you don’t understand at the moment, he is the best one for you.”
Still, a part of me questioned if it was really Him talking deep in my heart. When I finally said yes to my husband-to-be, he wanted to get married soon but I
didn’t. I kept on moving the date as I felt it wasn’t time. I knew in my heart that I was being called to serve Him for the World Youth Day festivities in Sienna College in 1995.
Only after that could I get married. I didn’t tell him this as I felt he would not understand then. The third time I moved the date, he got angry and didn’t speak to me for a few days. I was willing to let go of him already if he insisted on getting married earlier, but he stayed.
I was able to serve the Lord during the World Youth Day. Being part of the Love Our Priest Movement, we had the opportunity of an audience with Pope John Paul II at the San Carlos Seminary. Since I still had doubts about getting married, my prayer was, “If this man is truly meant for me and if the Lord was allowing me to marry already, then let me even just hold the hands of the Pope.”
We were lined up side by side as the Pope passed each one of us. When it was my turn, he held my head and said “I bless you.” I started to cry and said, “Thank
you, my Lord.”
We got married two months later. I was 28, he was almost 38. What made God’s blessing complete was when a family friend, a nun working in the Vatican, gave us a
Papal blessing certificate as a wedding gift.
I have learned to trust by letting go and letting God. All that I asked for in my high school prayer was granted. We have been married for 14 years and have
three children.
Everything falls into place for those who trust in God. He truly knows best.
